About Brockport, NY

Located on the western edge of Monroe County along the Erie Canal, the Village of Brockport is a unique community that blends suburban and rural elements. Known for its pedestrian bridge, kayaking excursions, and a popular summer arts festival, Brockport is also home to SUNY Brockport, contributing to a dynamic population of approximately 7,700 residents. The village balances small-town charm with a focus on responsive local government and community engagement.

The challenge that led Brockport to GOGov

Prior to adopting GOGov, Brockport’s communication methods relied heavily on social media and the village website. However, many residents weren’t actively seeking out information online, leading to a demand for a more proactive communication approach.

“As a society, people don’t want to have to go look for information — they want it put right in front of them,” explained Kari Pardun, Clerk/Treasurer. Brockport’s village manager tasked an intern with researching notification platforms, which led them to GOGov’s intuitive and user-friendly solution. “We liked how easy it is to set up new applets and subscriptions, even if you’re not very tech savvy.”

How is Brockport using GOGov today?

Brockport uses their GOGov citizen notifications mobile app, My Brockport Village, daily to send app notifications on a wide range of topics—from community events and concert notifications to urgent messages like water main breaks. Kari recalls a particularly busy week when she was out sick and returned to a flood of notifications needing to be sent.

“It’s been awesome because now residents can refer others to the app when they see complaints on social media,” Kari says. “People tell each other, ‘Don’t you have the app? They said this was going to happen.’ That’s really gratifying to see.”

To grow app subscriptions, Brockport places QR codes on water bills and creates posters for village hall, assisting residents in downloading and personalizing their notification preferences.

One standout use of the app has been making SUNY Brockport’s student rental property map more accessible. After a Town meeting highlighted that many weren’t aware of the interactive map on the village website, Kari quickly created an applet linking directly to it, making it easy for students to access critical rental information from their phones.

Additionally, Brockport has reduced its print newsletter distribution, making it available digitally through the app—providing residents easier access while saving costs and supporting environmental efforts.

Future Plans for Brockport

Brockport uses GOGov Citizen Notifications to provide targeted notifications for major projects, such as the ongoing construction of a lift bridge that has been under repair since May 2023. The app allows the village to regularly update residents and reduce frustration during this extended infrastructure project.

Excitingly, Brockport recently received a $4.5 million New York Forward grant to fund a mix of public and private projects. Kari anticipates using the app to keep the community informed on progress and next steps over the coming years.

Advice for other Municipalities considering GOGov solutions

“Do it,” Kari says. “People don’t want to go looking for information anymore—they want it put right in front of them. GOGov makes that easy.”

Kari praises GOGov’s responsive customer support and ongoing product improvements. She especially values features like editing posts and scheduling multiple notifications with just a few clicks. “I can do that in less than five minutes and know people will be pinged about it,” she says.
