As Texas continues to experience unprecedented growth, local governments across the Lone Star State are turning to innovative solutions to stay connected with their rapidly expanding communities. From the border town of Anthony to the Austin metro area, Texas local government leaders are discovering that modern local government software isn't just a convenience—it's becoming essential for effective governance.
Before implementing GOGov's platform, Texas municipalities faced a common struggle: how to effectively reach all residents, not just those active on social media.
In Helotes, Marketing & Events Coordinator Vanessa Vazquez explained the challenge clearly: "We had a lot of longtime residents who didn't use Facebook or check our website, and many of them felt out of the loop. Even though we were sharing information online, it wasn't reaching everyone."
Anthony's Town Clerk, Valerie Armendariz, faced similar obstacles relying on traditional methods like Facebook, flyers, and phone calls. The result? Important notices about utility shutoffs or emergency water leaks weren't reaching the public fast enough, and Town Hall was inundated with phone calls.
For Manor, a rapidly growing city just northeast of Austin with 21,000 residents, the communication channels before GOGov "were not as user-friendly." Residents had to make calls or send emails to city employees, "navigating through uncertainty as to whether their concerns would reach the appropriate personnel for resolution."
Each Texas community implemented GOGov's branded mobile app solution, creating customized platforms that reflect their unique identity:
What makes these apps particularly effective for Texas local government? One feature stands out: residents don't need to create an account to receive notifications.
Vanessa Vazquez emphasized this crucial detail: "Especially for our older residents, that's huge. They don't want to give out their email or register for anything—they just want to know what's going on in their city."
This accessibility has proven transformative for resident engagement, particularly in communities with significant populations of senior citizens or residents less comfortable with technology.
When a water main leak struck Anthony, Valerie Armendariz demonstrated the power of real-time resident engagement through GOGov's Citizen Notifications. When residents started panicking and calling local news stations, the town was ready.
"We sent out notices letting everyone know when the water was shut off and when it was restored. Public Works even provided photos showing the leak being fixed, all shared through the app as a real-time record," Valerie explained.
The result? The news station decided not to run a negative story because they saw the town was proactively managing the situation.
Valerie reflected on the transformation: "Before we had the app, I used to get nonstop phone calls all day during incidents like this. Now, with notifications sent even late at night, residents are satisfied knowing the town is transparent and keeping them informed. It's made a huge difference for our staff and the community—no more fearing the morning rush of complaints."
Manor's Development Services Director, Scott Dunlop, highlighted how their police department uses GOGov's Citizen Request Management system for code enforcement efficiency:
"Police are using Citizen Requests/311 a lot to notify our code enforcement officer about cars that are essentially abandoned or illegally parked in a manner that is a code enforcement issue, not a police issue. So, our officers really do enjoy being able to take a picture of this vehicle, drop a pin where it's located and then automatically our code enforcement guy gets an e-mail about it. Police don't have to remember where the vehicle was or sit down and write an e-mail about the issue. It makes it easy for them."
In Helotes, the impact goes beyond operational efficiency. Vanessa Vazquez shared: "Even if we don't always see the feedback directly, the peace of mind it gives us internally is so important. We know we're getting the word out in the fastest way possible."
The word-of-mouth marketing has been organic and powerful. "Sometimes I'll overhear people at events saying, 'Oh, I saw it on the app.' It's great to know people are not only using it but sharing it with others—it's like the residents are marketing the app for us."
Texas local government officials use their GOGov platforms for a diverse range of resident engagement activities:
Emergency and Service Updates:
Community Engagement:
Transparency and Record keeping:Fo r Anthony's Valerie Armendariz, the platform serves a dual purpose: "We use the app for everything. It shows our residents that we are doing something, and for us internally, it's like a recordkeeping system." The timestamped history in the admin dashboard provides a clear record of communication that's invaluable for audits and public transparency.
Across all four Texas communities, one principle emerged as critical: consistency.
Valerie Armendariz's advice to other Texas local government leaders? "I think I post at least once a day. You don't want to just use the app once or twice a month. Be consistent, post a variety of content, and have one dedicated person managing it."
She also emphasized the importance of compelling subject lines: "The subject line is what pulls people in—make it short and catchy."
Manor actively uses their platform for continuous resident engagement, sending out surveys to gather feedback for their digital rebranding and keeping citizens informed about bond decisions for their City Hall Library and Rec Center.
Texas communities are continuously finding new ways to enhance resident engagement through GOGov's platform.
Anthony recently enhanced their Citizen Notifications package by adding GOGov's SMS Texting and Voice Call feature, which Valerie sees as "especially helpful for reaching elderly community members who may be less tech-savvy or prefer phone-based communication."
As Anthony receives new funding and grant support for large-scale capital projects—including a new food truck park and public safety complex—Valerie plans to use the platform to "share progress updates throughout every phase of these projects—from groundbreaking to grand openings—building excitement and trust with the public."
Manor continues using their platform for continuous resident engagement, sending out surveys to gather feedback for their digital rebranding and keeping citizens informed about bond decisions for their City Hall Library and Rec Center. As Scott Dunlop notes, "As the rebranding project grows, the app will be a big part of the digital presence in Manor."
Helotes plans to continue using MyHelotes as a central communication tool for events, public notices, and resident services, especially as new initiatives and collaborations emerge in this growing Hill Country community.
Manor's Scott Dunlop summed up the transformation that local government software brings to Texas communities:
"By switching to the GOGov solution, it was putting it out there that there's a much simpler process to report problems and access follow up on our side. We're closing out projects with reasons and you know they're sort of getting that loop closed and making sure that the public can not only report to us issues, but also be satisfied in our response to them."
For Helotes, Vanessa Vazquez offers straightforward advice to other Texas local government leaders: "If you're looking for another way to reach people, especially those who don't use social media, [GOGov] is absolutely worth it. It gives you another place to share updates and makes residents feel more connected to their community."
And in Anthony, Valerie Armendariz has seen firsthand how the platform transformed not just communication, but the entire relationship between the town and its residents—turning potential crises into examples of responsive, transparent governance.
